Flames swept through the attic of a rural Petaluma home late Thursday, causing in excess of $100,000 in estimated damage despite what one fire official termed “a massive callout” of fire personnel. The fire appeared to have started in the chimney of the single-story home, said Petaluma Fire Capt. Richard King, whose department provided mutual aid and was with the first engine on the scene. The fire was reported around 10:45 p.m. on Western Avenue near Benjamin Lane just outside the western edge of the city. No one was injured in the fire, King said. “When we arrived, Mom, Dad, and child and dog were safely outside the structure,” he said. “It appears that it started as a chimney fire from a downstairs wood stove and basically worked itself into the attic.” But access to the house up a narrow, winding driveway with low hanging trees was challenging, he said. The fire was nonetheless pretty well contained to the attic, causing perhaps $125,000 in damage, King said. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or CALFIRE, contributed firefighting personnel and equipment. http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/article/20080404/NEWS/830382753/1033/NEWS&template=kart |
